GG Network menu Home Live Articles Tech Videos Shows Articles PBE.Don Dominates Red Bull Kumite Philippine Qualifier, Will Compete in Paris in November POSTED BY Martin Patino ON September 30, 2018 The Philippines might be considered a “Tekken country” but it definitely has no shortage of world-class Street Fighter players. PlayBook Esports’ Donald “Don” Gimperoso from Cebu, who has moreover competed in other international tournaments previously, bested his fellow Street Fighter pros to wilt the champion of the Red Bull Kumite 2018 Philippine Qualifier. He will be flying to Paris, France, in November to represent the country in the yearly tournament’s Last Chance Qualifiers where 256 other players from virtually the world will compete for the final spot in the tournament’s main event. Don entered Saturday’s tournament with a bye to Top 8, due to his 5th place position at REV Major 2018 several weeks ago. The top 4 finishers at the REV Major 2018 Street Fighter V tournament were awarded byes into the Red Bull Kumite 2018 Philippine Qualifier Top 8 but two of those, namely FChamp and Korea’s JeonDDing, chose to relinquish their spots. Don and fellow teammate PBE.Bully were then awarded the byes in their place. This left only four spots for the rest of the registered players to compete for, which were taken by Dru, VIP.Yoshi, Mraccountant, and SB.Secret Boss. Once the tournament’s Top 8 players were decided, Don quickly made his way to the grand finals with subsequent 2-0 sweeps versus Secret Boss and Ace, who are both from Team Secret Base. Don then defeated his teammate and REV Major 2018 Street Fighter V Champion PBE.Jamse to get the first spot at the tournament’s Grand Finals. Jamse wasn’t ready to bow out though as he bounced when in the Losers Bracket and defeated Bully to grab the second Grand Finals spot and a rematch with Don, with the latter having a twice-to-beat advantage. During the first set of the Grand Finals, it initially seemed that it would be a replay of Don and Jamse’s first match older in the tournament. But the latter was worldly-wise to mount a strong comeback in the fourth game without Don failed to tropical out what would have been the final round of the tournament. Jamse was then worldly-wise to swing the momentum and win the fifth game and the first set of the match. While it was looking like Jamse’s momentum would lead him to flipside tournament championship, Don showed his grit and wits as the five-year veteran was worldly-wise to take tenancy of the second set and ultimately win the tournament with a final score of 3-1. Don, who has been playing the game since Street Fighter IV, is considered one of the country’s weightier players. His mastery of the game’s fundamentals withal with his signature shimmy and wifely demeanor has led him to win multiple tournaments since Street Fighter V was released when in 2016. He initially played Ryu when the SFV first launched but has since switched to Akuma, who he used exclusively to win Saturday’s tournament.
